I was born in Prague and started playing tennis with my dad at the age of five. I was soon selected for the Czech elite program of special training. I trained and competed successfully for ten years before seeking with my mother refugee status in Canada at the age of 16. I competed successfully at elite levels also in Canada but came to realize as I was financing my studies that I enjoyed teaching tennis and had a gift for it.
My teaching experience started as tennis instructor at "Match Point" in Grey Rocks, Quebec, Canada, first teaching junior summer camps then moving onto coaching adults. In trying to promote the game of tennis, I helped to coordinate “Hit the ball Ottawa”, a volunteer program focused on organizing tennis clinics across various schools and community centres. I also worked with some of the most talented Canadian junior players, helping them with all aspects of the game, be it technical, tactical, physical or mental.
Eventually I became the Head Tennis professional at the Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club, 2000-member facility, in charge of all tennis activities and directing a team of 5 instructors. It is an incredibly rewarding feeling being on the tennis court, and seeing people and children enjoy themselves, making progress, getting hooked, and feeling good. I have been very fortunate to work with some of the best coaches in the sport in Czechoslovakia, Canada, US and UK, who have helped me develop my knowledge and skills to pass on to my clients.
At 25, I left tennis to pursue a completely different career in IT in sales and marketing. It was when I started to take my son to tennis lessons that I realized I would like to get back to coaching. And having a tennis court in the garden provided a perfect opportunity to share some of my experience with others.
